Ashton the record breaker

Northampton’s flying wing Chris Ashton broke the National One try scoring record over the weekend with his second consecutive four-try haul in the Saints’ away win at Doncaster Knights.

Ashton’s effort saw him move on to 29 for the season and surpass the previous record of 28, set last season by Plymouth Albion’s French wing Nicholas Sestaret.

The former Wigan rugby league man has nine games left in the National One season to reach the all time National League record of 38, set by Cornish Pirates winger Richard Newton back in the 1999/00 season in National Three South.

The 20-year old has notched his tries in just 15 starts for the Saints, plus five appearances from the bench.
