Captained the Lions aged 29 on their tour to South Africa in 1968 and scored a then record 35 points in the four Tests. The Lions lost three and drew one, but Kiernan, who also toured in 1962, proved a popular captain, played exceptionally well and emerged with reputation greatly enhanced.
