Bristol re-sign six players

Six Bristol players have signed new contracts, the club announced today.

Chris Ashwin, Ed Barnes, David Blaney, Mark Irish, Redford Pennycook and Roy Winters have all penned new deals ahead of Bristol’s Guinness Premiership clash at local rivals Bath on Saturday.

Head coach Paul Hull said: “I’m delighted that we’ve agreed terms with these players. We’ve worked hard to get things to this point and it’s great news for Bristol Rugby that they’ve committed themselves to the club.

“All six of them have featured at first-team level this season and will be central to our plans for next season.

“It’s a start and I hope to have more good news before too long.”

Ashwin signed last summer and has made seven first-team appearances while continuing his studies at Bath University.

Barnes joined Bristol from Plymouth Albion in 2007 and has been a regular at fly-half, earning him an England Saxons debut in January.

Blaney was initially signed as emergency cover when Neil Clark and Saul Nelson were both lost to long-term injury in a 2006-07 pre-season friendly but quickly won a longer-term deal, while Irish - who moved from Gloucester in 2008 - has made 14 first-team starts this season.

Pennycook is a Bristol boy who has progressed through the academy to the Guinness A League and second-rower Winters will return for a fifth season since signing from Harlequins.
